Machu Picchu is a 15th-century Inca citadel located high in the Andes Mountains of southern Peru, above the Sacred Valley near the town of Aguas Calientes. Built during the reign of the Inca emperor Pachacuti, the site is considered one of the most important archaeological treasures in South America.
Situated at an elevation of approximately 2,430 meters (7,970 ft), Machu Picchu is renowned for its sophisticated dry-stone construction, agricultural terraces, and panoramic mountain setting. Rediscovered by the international community in 1911, it has since become one of the most visited cultural landmarks in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
